چکیده

One way to improve the reliability of a network is through physical diversity, i.e., via routing of trafic between a given pair of nodes in the network over two or more physically-disjoint paths such that if a node or a physical link fails on one of the disjoint paths, not all of the trafic is lost. Alternatively, enough spare capacity may be allocated on the individual paths such that the lost traflc due to a node or physical link failure can be routed immediately over the predetermined paths. In this paper, we present optimal algorithms for K-disjoint paths (K22) in a graph of vertices (or nodes) and edges (or links). These algorithms are simpler than those given in the past. We discuss how such algorithms can be used in the design of survivable mesh networks based on the digital crossconnect systems {DCS). We also discuss the generation of optimal network topologies which permit K>2 disjoint paths and upon which survivable networks may be modeled.

Survivable lightpath routing: a new approach to the design of WDM-based networks

Network restoration is often done at the electronic layer by rerouting traffic along a redundant path. With Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) as the underlying physical layer, it is possible that both the primary and backup paths traverse the same physical links and would fail simultaneously in the event of a link failure. It is therefore critical that lightpaths are routed in such a way t...

Computer-aided design procedures for survivable fiber optic networks

We describe methods to design cost-eftective survivable telecommunications networks which employ fiber optic transmission links. One of these methods utilizes optical switching devices to implement route diversity during cable cuts. These methods have been incorporated into a software tool consisting of three modules: a topology generator, a circuit to DS3 bundler, and a multiplex layout system...

Optimal Reconfiguration of Distribution Network for Power Loss Reduction and Reliability Improvement Using Bat Algorithm

In power systems, reconfiguration is one of the simplest and most low-cost methods to reach many goals such as self-healing, reliability improvement, and power loss reduction, without including any additional components. Regarding the expansion of distribution networks, communications become more complicate and the number of parameters increases, which makes the reconfiguration problem infeasib...

Optimal placement of wavelength converters in trees, tree-connected rings, and tree of rings

In wavelength routed optical networks, wavelength converters can potentially reduce the requirement on the number of wavelengths. A recent study [Proceedings of 9th ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (1998)] raised the following problem: choose a minimum number of nodes in a WDM network to place wavelength converters so that any set of paths requires the same number of wavelengths as if ...
